Everyone dreams of running away to sea, and few do it, because of the need to earn a living. But Patrick and June found a way to make a living on the water, in the yacht delivery business. Founding their own firm in 1955 they set off on a series of adventures that took them from New York to Venezuela, Cuba, Nova Scotia, London, Paris and the Great Lakes.
On June's first voyage she didn't see land for 17 days and Patrick made corn beef hash three times a day. Later they sailed together in all kinds of boats including a research vessel that sent a million volts up a wire held by a helicopter, thousands of feet above.
Ashore, they worked on boats in Caribbean islands and French canals helping the local carpenters, electricians and plumbers get the boats ready for sea. And in their free time they sipped coffee on the sidewalks of Paris, strolled on beaches in Bermuda or climbed mountains in Jamaica.

For anyone with sailing experience this is a beautifully written account of a husband-wife team who delivered many yachts for people who had purchased them and wanted them moved, often to a distant location. The authors, Patrick Ellam and his wife June, are clearly very accomplished sailors, and much is to be learned about the hazards of the Caribbean, the Great Lakes, and the canals of the Northern USA and of the rivers leading from the English Channel to the Seine. The sailing accounts are told in exquisite detail, placing the reader right there in the situation, marveling at the competence and wisdom of the authors. Mr. Ellam, being English and born in 1920, and with espionage experience during WW II, is articulate and discerning. (I believe he is still alive and as of 2012 was building yet another boat at the age of 92.)
That the couple succeeded in surviving some of those old yachts that required repair before being seaworthy, and which would sometimes break down at critical moments, is testimony to cool heads and resourcefulness.
I did not want this book to end. But fortunately Ellam has written a number of sailing books, more to look forward to!
